It was because the game series backbone (Masuda) lost all hope when people didn't buy his Swansong to the series (Gen 5)
This simply coincided with 3D, it wasn't because of 3D itself, they just put less effort in these games now than they did in gens 1-5.
He stopped caring about the games, just started putting in the motions, and Game Freak doesn't have anyone to replace his role. He's also still around simply putting in the motions, a gen 5 fan should hug him.

The subject matter is 2D lad. Sprites unanimously look better than 3D models, even if imposed onto a 3D background. Octopath Traveler was a strong example of this particular art direction.

Hard disagree. The nonsensical mashup of 16bit sprites, early 3D era objects and textures, budget effects paired with modern-ish lighting effects and resolution just gives it a feeling of no art direction at all and makes it look like a fan project by someone who does not know how graphics work. At all.

Nullified by the fact that it’s implemented extremely poorly and makes gen 5 look even worse than gen 4.

the animations, just like the models themselves were commissioned to Creatures Inc. to be future proof, that's why they were for all mons including megas
Cleaner textures is the bare minimum, everything else was the same shit as the 3DS

Look, Masuda was happy XY. Nevermind that BW1 is like the 5th best selling DS game.

The current state of Pokemon has nothing to do with Gen 5 and everything to do with their lack of experience on modern hardware. Which persists in Arceus currently even with newer people taking over.

Its fairly obvious. They were far too used to developing 2D handheld games where expectations are lower, and you could get away with making an RPG where your story is mostly "Tell don't show"

Like it's really evident when you actually pay attention to the animations in the 3D games and the NPCs still move and behave like they do in the Gameboy games, and most of them still adhere to a grid when the protagonists dont.

TL;DR, gamefreak was always shit but it was easier to hide it when they were on weaker hardware.
