Regional variants are posed as environmental adaptations. It honestly would be very difficult to make a non-buglike Pokemon into one. That being said, we have buglike non-Bugs so those are just free real estate on the matter. Looking at you, Flygon line.

Yea that’s true, I think I could see it working though if maybe the mon had a diet of exclusively bug type and needed to adapt to a similar niche a predator bug would fill, like convergent evolution but a bit more fantastical
