Since Gen 6 tho, the franchise didn't really know what it wanted to BE anymore, and we've watched that struggle with it trying to fenagle it's way to solving this. The problem is they were all half-steps, Alola was the biggest step towards something different out of the last mainline titles but even it was bogged down by a lot of tradition. This was always going to happen, they're trying new things with the series but committing to it further by cutting away things that would otherwise hold them down (speaking more for Legends than Lets Go but wtvr)
