This was Pokemon lore since day 1 but from a GF written book that never left Japan, so it's jarring for most people since it's their first time hearing it said outloud

The consensus before PLA was that the pokeball forcibly shrunk the pokemon upon activation in order to capture it, which has been retconned to all pokemon gaining the ability to shrink themselves on command and hop inside the ball.

Even without that JP-only lorebook that's dubiously canon at best considering it was made when Pokemon still took place in an alternate version of the real world, Pokemon being shrunk down to fit into Poke Balls was something that we've seen in a bunch of media, ESPECIALLY PokeSpe which Taijrifags would know that at the time of Pokemon's infancy, it was his "true vision" of the Pokemon World.
