To be honest, the only Pokémon that Ash left behind was Butterfree. Two times. The first one it was in a trade with a fucking Raticate. The second one was a situation where he could only pretend he never heard about that mating stuff that Butterfree wouldn't even care.

It's so weird how this can be the overall truth, but so much of a mon's anime perception rides on their finishing moments. Gliscor is seen as a hero for the work it put in against Paul, and Greninja is seen as a jobber despite winning so much because it lost in the end.

If you win everything in a championship and lose the finals, it's still a lose that won't make you a champion.

Also, he became a pretty good trainer sometime in Advanced series. The good numbers are just a proof of that. Especially when the writers pull something like Tobias and Blast Burn from their asses.

That tier list takes Team Rocket battles into consideration. Also, Ash isn't a terrible trainer outside of BW. Not his fault that literal Diablos Ex Machinas appear to make him lose in the last minute. Also, Ash beat the Battle Frontier with NFEs. That alone makes him better than most people who call him a terrible trainer. Lastly, he's the only character in the anime to beat a champion, and he's probably going to beat Cynthia and Lance in the latest season.
