Pokemon can shrink them selves, the pokeballs don't do the shrinking and instead just force Pokemon inside. This has always been canon but autists who didn't know that thought it was a retcon are losing their fucking minds.

Schizos are upset that their selfinsert fanfictions are invalidated because they were extremely reliant on "Poke Ball Shrink Technology" interpretations when all Pokemon have an involuntary shrink defense mechanism should they be gravely injured or put into a dangerously unhealthy state in general, and the Poke Ball was just an invention that figured out how to trigger the shrink effect upon the ball's activation.

That's just some headcanon you made up to explain all the non-sensical shit like Pokemon not shrinking during battles nor when caged.
The game only tells you they can shrink, nothing else.
The "involuntary" and "defense mechanism" is just some headcanon you created to make it make sense.

It isn't headcanon. Pokemon have the ability to shrink down when in danger and have been able to do so since Gen 1.

Maybe if we compared the Japanese phrasing of it, we'd get a better idea. Here's a resource I use for text dumps.
