This is just something you made up. Gamefreak never said Pokemon could shrink at will to avoid being trapped. It's actually the opposite, the Pokemon's involuntary shrinking instinct is what allows you to trap them in your Pokeballs!

Nope, until something supersedes it, the JP Lore Book makes it clear a Pokemon will involuntarily shrink as a defense mechanism if it's in a very unwell, and distressed state. There's a lot of scenarios where this happens all over the franchise, no Pokemon is actually seen shrinking in response to the event in an attempt to escape to somewhere compact and away from the problem.

The OP text kind of fails at making pokeballs seem more realistic then. If it forces pokemon to shrink (as was thought before), or if it induces their natural shrinking ability, it's still basically a magic ball that doesn't make sense being made from raw materials. Ultimately its best to accept that its a fantasy world and no use trying to make sense of it.

I think the issue people are having is that unlike something like Mega Evolution or Dynamax, shrinking as a survival instinct is something all Pokemon can innately do. The important detail they're missing is that they only do it when they have a place to hide or when they're KO'd and they do it subconsciously. They can't do it on command unless they can learn Minimize.

What if it was a case of it being a genuine error since it's the early days of Pokémon researching, like we made errors about the Earth's form for example? What if the Pokéball do induce the shrinking reaction somehow? What if it's when they faint? What if it's whenever they want? What if...
That's the issue at hand, it's just a vague affirmation we could give hundreds of signification as to the details when it was clear even GameFreak didn't care and just wanted to say "Pokémon go zoom tiny like my pp in the Pokéball". I don't think it's worth sperging about anyway, it's GameFreak we are talking about, with such competence they could put in Gen 9 a proof of the complete opposite to that same sentence without a care in their mind.

It’s because Dynamax has an explanation as to why Pokemon grow to massive sizes. Dynamax also has limits.
With shrinking, the only limit is some anon’s wrong assumption that they can only do it when they are about to die. This is wrong however since they can shrink while being at hull health.
Since there is no limit to this ability, it begs the question as to why so many Pokemon and trainers abuse this ability so often.
With Dynamax, you could only use it once per battle, but Pokemon can supposedly shrink and expand with no limit yet is never once seen before outside of switching, catching, and ending battles.

They would have to create entirely new sprites to make this possible, and even then it will look bad due to hardware limitations. 3D allows for them to easily convey this.

Fainting wild pokemon didn't even shrink in the mainline games until like Gen 6. They all just fell through the floor. It's only when they're sent out via a pokeball do they shrink/grow. This is seriously just a big retcon so GF can explain the lazy fainting animation in 3D.
You know what would have been better? Ancient people didn't use pokeballs they just bonded with their pokemon. Maybe over time they found magic/tech in order to carry the pokemon around easier, see apricorn balls. And wild pokemon just, you know, run away after losing a fight. The shrinking thing is fucking stupid.

Yes and people went "huh, neat" and moved on. Primeape turned small in an experiment gone awry, which led to pokeballs, but this never implied that all pokemon have the innate ability to shrink. Nobody drew that conclusion when the Encyclopedia first made its way here, it was just a neat backstory for the introduction of the pokeball.

Because shrinking yourself to the size of a pebble has tons of potential for use cases in and out of battle, but it’s only ever used as a move on some Pokemon or when entering back into a Pokeball.
You’d think such a useful ability they can use any time, it would actually be used more than just entering a glorified WEF Pod and just to evade attacks.

If the Pokeball does the shrinking, then yes as that would explain everything.
If the Pokemon themselves do the shrinking, then they have to do it on command. Otherwise, Pokemon would only be able to switch when they are fainted, which clearly is not the case as you can switch Pokemon freely.
