With modern object culling and distance LOD techniques they aren't that much better off than the free moving competition anymore, but they still have the advantage in just the sheer optimisation you can achieve by having complete and perfect control of sightlines.
If performance is tanking in a bit because you can see one million flowers in the next area when you dont really need to, just stick a big rock in the way, that's probably why you round 2 corners because you reach the flower field on the first stage.
It also helps with load time limitations because you only need to load the parts of the map you can see or are about to see, but the game's only 6gb and the switch's RAM is 4gb so it can probably load a whole stage in RAM if it wants, this method probably only finds a use at the start of a stage. You could just load the first section of the map before you drop the player in then load the rest as you go shortening load times. Dunno if they do that but i'd do that.
