Almost 30 years of pokemon existing and I still don't get how it had so much success and how people still waste money on this crap in any of the forms it has

Basically the premise is simple and dumb, it's a technological version of rooster fighting and nothing else. The characters are poorly drawn with that "kawaii" look that only japs find cute and everything else is completely repetitive. The rest is just "omg japanese thing!"

Does this franchise use some type of top tier marketing/brainwashing techniques or were 90s kids victims of some mass worldwide autism epidemy?

I wish I could refute this but honestly I was in preschool when Pokemania hit and so I legitimately do not have memories of being alive as a human being before I was a Pokemon fan.

The designs and art styles look good, it's about animals and adventure like kids like, and even if it's not consumed by adults it's bought for their failed abortions just to shut them up. As for the current adult fans, they were clutched tightly when they were young, that approach to marketing is a very strong one and even if McDonalds can't do that anymore for whatever reason you can still see the effects it had and then look to pokemon to understand the outcome.
There is, of course, the coomers that /vp/ eunuchs love to hate. I'm not sure how many of them play the games but it's no secret that sex sells so that's just another clever marketing strategy Game Freak can make use of, pulling in curious horny people who want to see the hot girls or guys.
And on top of that nobody is allowed to criticize the series because criticizing things made/marketed for kids is a quick way of getting dismissed as a manbaby/incel/autist/basement dweller/whatever other tired insult the average NPC has written on a list, regardless of whether the critic in question is right or not. This effectively makes Pokemon games immune to criticism. Something being socially unacceptable is an extremely strong deterrent.
The quality of most mainline games ranges somewhere around decent though it does decline. Game Freak knows they can cut corners and they're daring enough to push that bottom line further with each game but they know they still have to have a certain standard which is why the games look bad to okay and play somewhere around decent. They can get away with less because of brand recognition and emotional attachment.
Marketing is very interesting, albeit a disturbing since it's basically manipulation. Pokemon as a brand makes for a great subject to study into.

Same. I can't remember how I got into Pokémon, just that I liked it. I remember watching my cousins play their Gen I games on their Pokémon GBCs like it was magic. I remember renting VHS tapes of episodes of the anime from Blockbuster, particularly the Krabby episode and the Dragonite lighthouse. I also watched it on TV. And I remember being given cards during summer 1999 while on vacation, and seeing the Mewtwo movie in theaters. I don't remember what my earliest memories of Pokémon are, just that the only one I can date is from summer 1999 when I was 5. But I absolutely remember the joy of first playing Pokémon Silver on Christmas Day in 2000. I remember the wonder, the mystery, the music, finding Lapras, Lugia, battling Red and coming to the understanding that the game continuity was the same as the anime continuity.

I think that Silver was my most prominent experience that hooked me as a fan. My way of viewing the franchise and my expectations were tied to that game. It wasn't about playing new stories, it was about continuing my adventure, finding new locations in new regions and discovering secrets. The closest I ever got to really feeling that magic again was with Diamond.
