What are you talking about? Gen 5 has the most people autistically sperging about it to get attention. Gen 5 was the last time Pokemon aspired to be art. It was far from perfect but it was the culmination of 12 years of experience in the 2D adventure space. It showed tons of effort and ambition in both plot, gameplay and artwork even if misguided at times.
I think of it like when BioWare/Black Isle jumped from the Infinity Engine to Aurora Engine, which was in virtually every way a backward move but at the time was overshadowed by the acclaim at the technical achievement. A bare-bones single player campaign along with tools and a primitive 3D engine does not make for a good game, it's an engine license in disguise.
In many ways criticism of the older gens should be in relation to Gen 5.
