Did you stuff your pokemon full of exp candies? If you go around catching and battling in the Wild Area you're obviously going to get some levels, but it shouldn't be too much unless you sit there grinding instead of continuing the story and revisiting the wild area every once in a while as intended.

Just don't use EXP candies, if you don't the enemy trainers WILL catch up and pass you in the late game.
