Why of all people would Game Freak choose the music composer to direct a series?

It would be like Christopher Nolan telling Hans Zimmer to direct his next movie.

Seniority is power in Japanese corporate politics and Masuda was the only viable option out of the original GameFreak guys.
In his defense, RS, DP, BW, and XY are all decent games at worse, even if BW is the only outlier that didn't need a revision to make what was there shine through. Even LGPE is decent enough in comparison to the massive piles of shit it was thrown out between up until Legends

Japan values seniority over basically everything else. Game Freak was founded by Tajiri, Sugimori, and Masuda so when Gold needed an assistant director, Masuda or Sugimori were the obvious choices. Gold's success basically locked him in as the main director of the series once Tajiri retired.
