I used to do it back then, and I still do it to this day. I have never once used a starter in Pokemon, because I don't believe in the concept of starters.
My most memorable playthrough I ever did was probably when I did a mono-Fire run of Pokemon Pearl, just before Platinum came out. Since I don't use any starters, I couldn't use Infernape. So the only Pokemon I could use was Rapidash. So that's what I did. I had a team of six Rapidashes, and nothing else
