It was always a duo (Magmar and Electabuzz)

In encounter tables they are always the opposing ones whle Jynx is either uncatchable (Frlg) or appears on both versions (DP)

This, but I suppose more tangentially. Punch moves and babies are what connect Jynx to the other two. Plus, although Jynx was available via trade in RG/RB, it was available in the wild in Japanese Blue while the other two weren't.
Also, and this is just my autistic headcanon, but looks at the dex numbers for Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar with both the Eeveelutions and the birds - the Ice/Water type has a dex number that ends in 4 (124, 134, and 144), the Electric type has a number that ends in 5 (125, 135, and 145), and the Fire type has a number that ends in 6 (126, 136, and 146).

It was never a trio. Electabuzz is an Oni and Magmar is a Karura, buddhist mythos creatures.
Jynx is a humanoid psychic and so is mr. mime and they have nearly the same stat totals.

They were a trio. Electbuzz and Magmar have 'boo' in their Japanese names, and so does the beta version of Jynx. They were also the only Pokemon in Gen I to learn the elemental punches aside from Hitmonchan. They were always meant to be a group.

Pokemon tends to be really fucking autistic when it comes to BST and distributions when pokemon are supposed to be related. Magmar and Electabuzz have some relation, Jynx does not.

Rayquaza also has a higher BST than Groudon or Kyogre. Pokemon often display power relations in their groups, while often following something like a distribution trend, like Rayquaza having the high offenxe of both Groudon and Kyogre, but also having the low defence of both Groudon and Kyogre.

Landorus IS one of the more unusual members of a group, though.

i used to think they were especially with the babies in gen 2 but there were supposed to be a lot more babies back then. so i'd just say that electabuzz and magmar are a duo whereas jynx and mr mime are also a duo. first two are found in the pokemon mansion and the latter two are only available through trading. though i guess that would also make lickitung and farfetch'd a duo... so idk whatever maybe they're a trio after all.

Actually Magmar is partly based on a Hyottoko (blowing fire man), that's the reason for his deformed head and his lips blowing fire.

Jynx is partly based on a Yamma Uba, for this reason Smuchum is based on baby Kintaro.

This was revealed in a Japanese blog, but they clarify that the pokemon take inspiration from various sources.

I always thought of them as a trio and they reminded me of the legendary birds of the first gen. Galarian Articuno even has her secondary typing which means an electabuzz regional would be fighting type and a regional magmar would be dark type

Also within ganguro or gyaru fashion there is an extreme version called Yama-uba/Yamanba (also based on the name of the yokai) which consists of very dark skin with bright makeup and golden or silver hair.
