You could tell they were just DLC in the guise of a new game.
That being said, they're the last game we ever had that had all the pokemon in one place. All that data chunked into one itty bitty cartridge. Sure they didn't have the national Dex itself, but that made completing it so much easier.
They had like a 10th of the Soul found from ORAS, which truly was the last "good" game. I love Poipole and Naganadel, which saves USUM from going into the toilet.
I'd say the story was something different, but having to press A over and over hoping they finish the dialogues took lots of points off for me. I also disliked retconning the consequences from Lusamine's jellyfish jamboree. Really, Sun/Moon had the story, but USUM had the meat and potatoes.
