The trees are not supposed to have star fragments in them, and there was no means of "cheating" to get them to do this. You just had to put your hard-earned fragments into the trees with the technique. The developers and the Japanese were confused about it because they were lied to that it was an item duplication exploit. Only a few of them actually mourned it after they saw what it did, while others never even missed it because they don't look outside their Japanese bubble, and those Japanese fans never knew about star trees.
As for the patch, anyone that didn't gather up their stars before the update (which didn't announce it was going to wipe them out) lost them entirely. Lotta people quit the game for a while until later updates because of it.
