It's a pun that doesn't really translate, the reason Ursaring has a ring in the first place is because of the Japanese name for the Asian black bear, which explains the entire moon theme for the line.

I don't even get why they kept the moon aspect in the name since it's a mud bear now. I haven't read it's dex entry so maybe I'm missing something but it just seems odd.

As for the moon on it's head, does that come into play with how it functions in general, because you can slap a moon on any pokemon but that doesn't make it heavily based on the moon. Honestly, I've never understood the Ursa lines relation to the moon in general. Like, it feels like GF drew a bear and was like "Shit, we need to make it less like a normal bear... Idk, give it a moon theme".

The shoulder frills on Ursaring are based on Native American clothing. Most Native American tribes featured bears as a prominent part or their culture, usually revering them for their strength.

I'm not entirely sure if the person who designed Ursaluna was aware of this, they may have included the frills just cuz the other stage had them, who knows. Although, apparently Native Americans associated the bear with healing for.....some reason? And the moon is as well, so maybe there's something there

Literally every 12 year old is aware the root word luna means moon, thanks. No my issue is that Ursaluna sounds incredibly clunky.

I'm surprised no one itt has agreed so far, you guys don't think the word isn't awkward? It sounds like 2 words roughly glued together—and spare me the quip you were about to make about how that's what most Pokémon names are like. Most combined-word names in this franchise are carefully selected to actually SOUND nice. Ursaluna doesn't flow well in the slightest, it feels forced.
