I think this game is fine. Story was underwhelming coming off of Black and White. But it's not like I played pokemon for the story anyway. I appreciated how huge the regional pokedex was, for once, I was constantly rotating my team and training pokemon I had never trained before. The huge regional dex is what inspired me to start a living dex, which I actually completed in gen 6. And I liked Megas a lot to.
They made breeding for IVs and EV training actually approachable for once that I actually started dabbling in breeding for max IVs and EV training. I still wasn't into competitive play or playing against strangers, but this was also a time when my friends were all battling each other. Never really did much multiplayer stuff before gen 6.
But I didn't like ORAS much at all, and most of my friends didn't buy it at all so there was no fun multiplayer sessions. I didn't finish gen 7 and just didn't buy gen 8.
I think it's overhated but I get exactly why it's hated.
