Gens 1 and 2 had the best balancing in the series as far as singleplayer JRPG goes, (Smogonfags need not apply, VGC is objectively superior) the mons all follow a smooth progression curve, and fit where they appear in the game, it was very soulful, balanced and enjoyable, for example
>Onix is a Boss Pokemon. So it's weak and gimmicky in the lategame but it's strong earlygame to test the player, then Bruno has two Onixes to fit the JRPG trope of the boss returning as a normal enemy, it feels very satisfying to easily crush his team and see how far you've come. It also is easier to get than Golem but is weaker. The same also applies to Miltank, Clefable, Pinsir and Scyther
>Fearow has better stats and STAB than Pidgeot because it's hard to get, placed after Erika to not be broken
>Ice types were locked to the lategame to balance out their overwhelming power, being some of the only Pokemon able to kill the impenetrable Blissey by freezing it, and countering Dragonite and Kingdra to prevent them from running rampant
>Dugtrio, despite being a terrifying trapper, was still balanced out, as you had to risk losing your teammates to catch it earlygame
>Postgame mons had amazing niches that would have made them break progression like Houndoom's unresistable STAB and Misdreavus being both spike immune and spin blocker
>Bugs were godlike earlygame due to early evo, Ledian was as tanky as Blissey before the 4th gym and Beedrill setup sweeper
>Azumarill was a bulky water screens setter, Hitmonchan was a mixed attacker with elemental punches, Kingler used special Crabhammer to hit things Strength couldn't kill, more mons than you think didn't even need the split or abilities to be viable
I could say more but i think this paints the picture well enough, gens 1-2 were pure SOUL and excellent Final Fantasy-esque design
