They go into the pokeballs.

What do you think all those pokeballs with items inside you keep finding on the ground are? They are the remains of a pokemon who carried an item, and wasted away when their trainer lost/abandoned them or died.

Okay, then why don't they use that technology for storage solutions? They could load lots of shit into storage containers with that tech and fit 10,000x the stuff on freight trucks, ships, etc.

It's 99 of each and that's only in the games, not in the anime or manga or movies... it's obviously just a game mechanic, nothing to do with lore.

You know why pokémon in PLA can't hold items? Because the old poké balls are simply capsules where the shrunk pokémon can fit into. Their held items obviously can't shrink

But after MODERN poké balls with the digitalization mechanism were inventend, pokémon can now hold items, since both pokémon and item are turned into data and stored in the poké ball. No shrunk required

Why don't Pokémon ever make use of their shrink ability in the wild? We literally have never seen a wild pokemon shrink or expand from a shrunken state.

That's wrong. It also happens when a pokémon faints. When it's too tired to continue battling the reaction just kicks in

But poké balls can trigger that involuntary reaction even when the pokémon is perfectly healthy because they're nice comfy small capsules. The pokémon sees them and instantly goes "damn it must be nice in ther- OH NO I'M SHRINKING AIIIEEEEE"

Shrinking is canon to the mainline games and Adventures. The anime never showed or mentioned anything about it so we can assume that's not how it works there.

Was the pokemon storage system also introduced with these modern digitizing balls or were pokeballs with shrunk pokemon being sent with pneumatic tubes?

Because it would make literally zero sense for digitalization to exist in old times, when not even computers were a thing. The shrinking lore it's just there to explain how poké balls worked before the digital age. That's why the only times it was mentioned was in a Gen 1 guidebook, by Lucian after going to the Canalave Library, and in PLA. Because it's only relevant from a historical standpoint.
