How could Farfetch'd almost be driven to extinction? Why didn't they just shrink to escape from the people that wanted to eat them?

Whenever they'd shrink, the other Farfetch'd would mistake them for bugs and eat them. The resulting cannibalism gave the remaining Farfetch'd population Kuru, which resulted in most of those dying as well.
