the red arrows mean each task counts as 2 research levels
complete tasks the requested number of times until you hit research level 10 to complete the pokedex entry, or check off all of them for a perfect entry that boosts shiny rate

How is research level determined though? Like in the pic I posted Bidoof is research level 5. How did it get to 5? What is the calculation?

Count the number of checkmarks, and count the one in the boost category as 2.
It will become level 6 when you report to the professor with your unreported "number defeated" task that is highlighted

Research level 10 gives you doubled shiny rate. Getting 100% research increases it to four times the base rate.

I was also confused and don’t recall that being explained. Could have just used a 1rp and a 2rp or something instead of black and a weird red double arrow and it would have made a lot more sense.
