That's a plot point. The village is new so it doesn't really have much in the way of crops yet. As you finish sidequests and introduce the villagers to the concept of working side-by-side with Pokemon, the town slowly expands. If you do the field-tending sidequests over the course of the game, the town starts growing new crops.
