Yes. XY NEEDED a Z. XY was the first 3D game and naturally had a very slow and affected development time. Z would have been the way to add in the content they had to cut and give the game the polish it truly needed.

Instead nintendo forced them to make ORAS and the franchise has gone downhill ever since.

This part kind of bothers me really because it means your team will almost always be filled with 3 starters (also probly pikachu too, since that's the whole gimmick). So you get 2 slots to be creative (probly the legendary birds). Everyone's playstyle felt pretty unique in red/blue, wheras in yellow it feels a lot more predictable.
