I will always like HMs. SM are some of my favorite games and I still wish they had HMs. I think it's great level design and makes me feel better connected to the world and my pokemon.

ive never really had too much compaint about hidden moves but they would be miles better if you could teach them to a monster and have it NOT take up a move slot. just indicate in their summary or status somewhere that they know an HM and it remains activatable from both the menu and field. also bring back the ability to cut away tall grass, soulful as fuck

This isn't exploration, though. The whirlpool example given is one of the worst, most linear uses of HMs in the series. I get liking hidden areas blocked by HMs, but that shitty example is not the hill to die on.

See how no one complains about Surf, Strength, Fly but always complain about Cut, Rock Smash, Flash, etc.
Cut and Flash were especially egregious because Cut was outclassed the moment you got it, and Flash was OBJECTIVELY inferior to all other accuracy lowering moves (prior to Gen 4) because it was as accurate as Thunder. But at the very least Flash wasn't mandatory.

I don't care about the exploration meme. Just go back to the pokemon center and get a pokemon with whirlpool if you don't have one. That is so fucking petty and insignificant. Dragon's Den is great. It was all part of my quest to mindbreak Clair. She's my cocksleeve now and when I'm not using her I let my Whirlpool Psyduck have a go at her.

Why is this retard so annoyed about the notion of backtracking? A lot of what made HMs cool was going back to routes you've been before and exploring new areas.
Also, if you're at gym 8 and don't have something that can learn whirlpool (most water types do) then clearly you've been playing wrong.
