Masago definitely does give a more "realistic" interpretation to things, and his work in classical Chinese/Japanese artwork influences his designs (especially the visible, striking, eyes).
By "definitive version" I'm just referring to my personal mental image when someone says to me "Umbreon card" or "Ho-oh" card. I don't visualize Kusube's ho-oh or Call of Legends Ho-oh, or Legends Ho-oh, or 5ban ho-oh. I think of Masago's. Same with Umbreon. Those two versions are the most iconic of those respective pokemon. I'd argue the same with a few others too (but not all). I'm sure there are other people (perhaps even yourself) who think of a different card in their mind when someone says "Umbreon," but that's what I think of.
