This is objectively the most soulful non mainline game and probably just the most soulful pokemon game with one of the best stories period. I have no idea why it's not talked about more

I really wish there were more games centered around double battles. That simple change opens up a lot more strategy. I also liked how Colosseum and Gale of Darkness tried to limit how high of a level you were by having shadow pokemon store XP, and also making it more annoying to grind.

Both of those games are fantastic, and I hope that style of pokemon game comes back in some fashion. I don't expect it to be soon since they just took a "big" risk with PLA, but maybe between Gen 9 and 10 it'll happen.

Yes bc they had all the Pokèmon in super fluid 3D that wasn't shit for their time. The story and the gimmicks were really good as well. Double battles are also more fun than single battles and in XD there's only one of the latter.

But I can trade Pokémon to and from this game with RSE and FRLG. It has its own origin data shared with Colosseum and player characters from both games have their own IDs and secret IDs and whatever. It can't not be a mainline game.

It's in a weird grey area. The major arguments for them not being mainline was they were developed by a studio that wasn't Game Freak and the gameplay didn't follow the formula, however the switch games prove neither of those are deciding factors. They're definitely not completely spin-offs though as the overall gameplay is still 90% what you get with mainline compared to Snap where you're essentially playing a hidden object/fps game or TCG where you're playing the card game instead of having actual monsters or Ranger where you're only temporarily catching pokemon and using their unique abilities primarily in the overworld or any of the others that are a completely different interpretation of the world of pokemon.
