i actually really like kingdra. i always have.
it's also not a pure dragon type, nor primary dragon type.
the dragon-type is still treated as mythical and legendary - in the three years since RBY, by the time GSC roles around only a single additional one has been discovered. what's more, this thing has essentially no weakness and incredible (for the time) stats.
also makes sense, since seadra was heading in the direction of being dragon-related a little bit. i think it's okay.

Cool it's based on a real seahorse. Still doesn't justify the second dragon in the game being a fucking seahorse rather than a fucking DRAGON like it should have been

it's a japanese joke, sea horses are called sea dragons in japan. if you check the pokedex entry for seadra in gen 1, he's the dragon pokemon. either way, he's pretty cool in my book. no weaknesses before sableye/spirtomb came around, and then eelektross when fairy got introduced.

he did have a weakness to outrage and twister in gen 2. but that's it. basically only dragonite/kingdra had those moves anyway. kingdra's mid-high balanced stats were great for gen 2 along with its essentially awesome defensive typing.
