No he's really just a professor, and in this age he's just there as scientific support. The story doesn't revolve around his role, to ask you to make the first Pokedex, and he doesn't really know what the fuck is going on with the space-time rift - that's more for Kamado and the 2 clans to worry about. He's there for the ride mostly which I think is why I like him, he doesn't overstay his welcome, he's just kind of there.

No one else gives a shit but it's weird that the stereotypical foreign Englishman in this time period is a colonial(?) Indian that acts culturally British. Don't see any point to not making him look like a Victorian English explorer. Making modern Galar brown I sorta get but mid-1800s is a bridge too far for me. Should have been a silly take on pic related instead.

Eh. It has basis in real world cultures and geography. Lightning American, finding Mew in South America, and so on. These things are lampshaded now (like that Copperajah comment) but still there. I'd have found it just as odd if Kukui had been a big Swede in a hanfu, so it isn't simple brown hate. I just find the decision nonsensical in this case. Clearly acts Galarian, but Indian. Why?

The real answer is because many characters in Hisui are vaguely related to modern characters, and he's probably supposed to be connected to Hop even if it makes little sense given the real world context the character's role is based on

I don't hate him. I enjoy that he's the one describing Pokemon in the Pokedex, it's a nice change of pace from Merriam Webster type of dex descriptions. Definitely a more involved professor than the others, despite being chubby.

The only decent NPC. He was always upfront about wanting you to help him with his research, and doesn't spend the entirety of the game reminding the player they're a stranger and that they need to earn everyone's trust.
Also, the dialogue just before you set out to the avalugg area saw him questioning shit as a scientist would. Overall, based.

Eastern world, too. Mid-1800s Japan had no shortage of white westerners who wanted to learn about them and conduct diplomacy or trade. And those explorer societies really existed, counting members such as Charles Darwin. So there's a lot to draw inspiration from there if that's the kind of character you're drafting.

But foregoing that model (or enhancing it) in favor of drawing a connection to Hop in the present makes sense. Same archetype but brown+Galarian because Hop/Leon are brown+Galarian. In retrospect I feel dumb for not realizing that's why
