Although Pokémon games can be good or bad relative to one another, the series itself will never be "great" relative to the game industry at large (nor have they ever been, for that matter). Because Pokémon is a huge household name publicly accepted to be generally appropriate for kids of most ages, it will always sell well to the general public. Little innovation is required to sustain it, and if it ain't broke, it ain't gonna get fixed.
