How was Mew obtained back in R/B/G? I know it wasn't obtainable through in-game means, and Mystery Gift wasn't a thing back then. Did people have to hack it?

I got mine by going to a kiosk (pic related) at a shopping center, it was neat. I had one of those 15 in 1 games with Pokemon on it and the people running the event let my brother have two Mews and trade me one.

Basically anyone who had a Mew got it by using gameshark. Events/contests where you could get a legit one were rare and the mew glitch wasn't discovered yet

You had to go to the local game store. Pretty sure you had to bring your own link cable too. Which is why everyone suddenly became my friend that week, because apparently I was the only kid that had one. I spent nearly all of launch just cloning Mews.

I remember getting my first Mew during the DVD release of the Lucario Movie. There was this event at Toys R Us where some guy simply traded you a Mew. They also had free Pikachu paper hats and a raffle for the Movie which came with a special Mew Trading Card. These Live events were kinda neat compared to the "go to GameStop for this serial code"

Legaly, events but rarely anyone had access to those. Most people used Game Genies for that. Years later after the Mew Glitch was found most people did that.

I went to the Training Tour '99 where I handed my Blue cartridge to a person who put it in a slot on a machine that put a Mew on it. I recall they told everyone to make sure there's a free spot in their party, which is where it put the Mew. They also gave a paper certificate with each Mew.
The event also had someone showing off the upcoming Yellow on a big screen using a Super Gameboy. I remember someone asked if you could make Pikachu so mad it zaps you, and he said we'd have to wait for Hey You Pikachu for that. I think they were also demoing Stadium.

I wish they had came by where I grew up but I never got word. and I gre up in the SF Bay Area so I would imagine there would be one stop somewhere there. But I got my Mew by the old link cable glitch where you traded with somebody and the person who got the undesired pokemon would just turn off his game after the trade and they kept their traded Mew.

The one they had at Training Tour '99 in the US looked very similar. I didn't get a look at the front of the machine though, so idk if it was the same Super Gameboy with modified cartridge setup, but they stuck the cartridge into a slot on the front of it very much like that.

BS, Richmond is practically in the middle of the state. You can get to either DC or VA Beach in less than 3, and the western parts aren't 7 hours away.

I got one (that still lives on stuck on my blue cart forever) from a Toys R Us giveaway where they were giving away stickers and if you peeled off the Mew sticker it revealed whether you won one or not then had to bring your cart back to redeem it.

I maybe remembering this wrong considering it was over 2 decades ago but I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

I don't think we ever had an event here but I bought this bad boy for ~25€
Advertised itself with Mew on the package and had installed cheats for various other games. Best shit was that you could create cheats yourself and enter new codes from other people. The method of creating new cheats was basically corrupting the game so that was fun to fuck around in games with as well till they break.

That's what most "distrobution carts" in the first 3 generations were. Just regular copies of the game that shipped with a save file with a bunch of event Pokemon in the boxes that the event organizer had to manually trade to kids.

No, it wasn’t
The glitch only became widely known in 2003, possibly a handful of people knew about it in the 90s but it’s doubtful.
This wasn’t just some glitch that could be easily discovered, it requires you to deliberately skip a trainer, catch and Abra and then use teleport on a specific tile.

Blame Gen 4, the fact Arceus was dropped into your hands by the local Poke Mart Deliveryperson made normalfags realize they love instant gratification and vocalized this sentiment loudly and frequently enough for GameFreak to look at it and say "Sweet, they don't give a fuck anymore! Less effort for us, haha!" and that's why EVERY event gets the Deliveryperson treatment nowadays. They don't even bother making up proper lore or justifying why they're worthy of the title "Mythical", you have Meltan that's depicted as a common house pest in its reveal and Zarude that's a regular ass pack of grass monkeys in the same game as Grookey.

Pick up X number of objects and go to a spot in the Nevada desert and yell Orthorhombus 200 times then sleep no later as the Sun sets and the moon rises. On 2/22/2022 and you get warped into the Super Boss Room on Planet Agalack.
With out the weapons and items you where supposed to have to become the new Dimurge.

Is there any documentation about it's discovery? Because I could have sworn that this is how my brother and I got ours back in the day (although I was 7 or 8 at the time I might be misremembering.) But I've always remembered him looking up glitches and cheats online, and even though most of them were fake because this was 98-2000, the one to catch Mew by flying around to specific places was one of the ones that worked.

No you don't, when the special form of Flabebe didn't come out everyone whined about an unfinished game. Same with Zugarde getting delayed a gen. You don't want something like Mew because you complain whenever it looks like you might get it.

tried it already and got softlocked in that transitional area between the first and second phase of the battle

This is my only complaint. I want events to unlock scenarios that lead to an encounter with the mythicals, not just get them as a gift. Deoxys in ORAS, Keldeo in IoA and all the gen 4 mythicals in PLA are a step in the right direction.
