My theory for why these two took off is when you put interesting character designs in the hands of the right artists you get something that spreads like a wildfire. I believe this is also something that happened to some degree with Touhou, where the art wasn't very good in the source material starting out but some of the fanart I've seen blows most other art of most other series out of the water. I'm probably not totally right since I'm far less of a Touhou expert than I am a submas autist but I think the similarities may still be there.
