>>49538756>>49538739>>49538713I played the original red and blue recently, i am also someone who as a kid used an overleveled starter, a seadra snd zapdos when playing the original as a kid.
I leveled up a team of 6 pokemon with my starter being 2 levels above the rest of my team at all times. I didn’t use the exp share until I started going to cinnabar island.
My team ended up around level 46-48 by the time I reached the elite four. i still managed to beat it no problem. I never did any grinding outside of fighting all trainer battles.
Conversely heres my experience with XY WITHOUT turning in the exp share unless I actually felt underleveled:
Troughout the entire game i leveled up a team of 6 while keeping my starter and kanto starter two levels above the rest of my team. I never once stopped to grind and battled all trainer battles. I felt significantly overleveled at multiple points and when Trainers actually caught up with me in levels i quickly overtook them. The one exception was in the middle of the pokemon league, I actually was underleveled by 2-3 levels due to a large sudden spike in trainer levels, it was the only time i used exp share and I quickly turned it off after all my mons where caught up. I faced diantha at equal levels.
My experience with USUM using the same practices as before:
Once again I was overleveled the entire way and I never felt the need to turn on exp share. The only thing that was difficult was trying to beat the hypercharged necrozma boss fight, everything after was piss easy.
As for sword and shield, I was always 5-10 levels ahead of any gym
I am completely and utterly convinced that the devs don’t properly beta test how exp share and catching exp affects their level progression and they have kept the same overall format theyved used since the GBA days. I would mind this significantly less if exp would scale and they actually balanced trainer battles around the forced exp share but that is definitely not the case.
