The official Pokémon website lists PLA as a main series game, so it is. That's the only thing that matters. Main/spinoff status is not defined by game mechanics and game features.

Gen 9 probably is pretty far in the making progress. So if they make PLA to test the new change. Gen 9 probably doesn't have all that open world and real time combat of PLA
