It's first Pokémon was Actually Charmander, since it's home town worshipped Charizard as their lord and savior. He flee it tho because it wanted a Treecko, and that any other Pokémon besides Charizard was consider Heresy to it's Home town.

Is there really any reason to think he's strong other than the fact that he was given an overpowered mega? He wins a league but we've seen before that that doesn't mean much and IIRC all of his battles against big trainers were mainly 1v1s using the plot armor form.

The anime has always had some rly cool trainers that would've been fun to see. Masters is pretty much the best (and only) place TO see them too, seeing as the put Jessie and James in. I personally want to see pic related interact with the game MCs.
