if this is true, then that means they were probably already in development of gen 9 then saw the overwhelming positive reception of the PLA formula from the fandom and probably went "scrap this shit, grab the PLA engine. extend development by a year to make it happen"

People didn't start saying "It'll be better next game" until X and Y. If I want to be technical, there are a lot of normies who believe Pokémon stopped being good at Gen III (it was a dip but their focus was more on digital colors and designs and surface level arguments). Sales are also not an indicator of quality, hence the past decade being extremely profitable for Pokémon but also being a dark period in terms of quality. I think signs of Pokémon's unfortunate future began to sneak their way in as early as 2008 in Platinum, that Unova was the first region made with their accessibility guideline, and that the 3DS games went harder and harder on that.
