The part where they're trivial to catch seems to deflate the purpose, but I think it's a good idea. Early on, before figuring out they can be caught with bait and a backstrike like everything else in the game, they were pretty intimidating and a great addition to the gameplay experience. If you were forced to catch them through battle, the traditional way, I think that'd be a marked improvement.

Fuck no. Half of them know double-edge and instantly kill themselves. They're much more of a threat when you're incentivized to catch them outside of battle where they can actually kill you.

I like encountering them and fighting them, a lot. It adds a good challenge and a sense of exploration. If I have one criticism, I'm not wold about how this game encourages you so hard to "trade up" and ditch part of your squad for alphas , but that's personal preference, and it's not like I was forced to do it, but I had no reason not to, and yet it's a bit feel-bad.

I wish the alphas uses the gang up mechanic more. Totems had summoned Pokemon that played into their strategy sometimes, it is a missed opportunity to have alphas be pack leaders for really high level challenges.

Catching an alpha outside of battle is too easy though, it completely ruins the desired affect of having them be imposing and intimidating. The simple solution would be requiring a specific way to get them to lower their guard, as opposed to just chucking a berry near them. Maybe being able to send your own unevolved pokemon near them, like if there was an alpha lucario you could distract them with your riolu.

This was part of my isldea above about alphas using the gang up mechanic and being pack leaders. They're around their unevolved Pokemon, sure, but if it was nearly impossibly to sneak up on them without attracting a squad that would buff them or something, could be fun. Keep a few loners to have lower level challenges to make the Pokemon that roll deep really rare and memorable

They'll keep them because it's literally no effort. There's no way they cut variable sizes, and Alphas are just maxing the slider with a headstart on stats. Also, they weren't the gimmick of the game, the nobles were. I think there's a much greater chance that those get replaced in the sequel

Upon closer inspection of those eyebrows, I have come to realise you're right on this matter.

I can't help but think this may have been intentional, from the "genetic shota" hair of the base Growlithe, to the excessively well defined eyebrows and resting "stern smile" of the Arcanine.
