Your character is the assistant of the Professor from Galar, which would be funny since Sw/Sh was released prior to the Sinnoh games, and you travel together to this new region to discover things about Pokemon. The professor is terrified of Pokemon, but you are not and neither are a lot of Galar residents.
You could re-write it a thousand ways. The fact that Kanto and Alola are mentioned about already training Pokemon means this is not a universal shared fear.
