People argue about the "Pokemon = animals" thing but we know they're generally that universe's equivalent of nature and wildlife with some supernatural and sci-fi elements thrown in between, but digimon are all over the place
I got the same question for SMT demons since you can have multiple demons of the same deity sometimes fighting one another

Looking like a Digimon is such a meme that is usually said by someone who is so blinded by brand loyalty that they've never played another monster taming game in their life since they see it as "the enemy" instead of another game that could help the growth of the subgenre if it had a fraction of the support that Pokemon's blind consoomers give their precious franchise.

Digimon can look as simple as a ball with a face or as complex as a gundam with armor on top of their armor.

Fucking Jigglypuff looks like a Digimon. You could easily slot Jigglypuff in as an in-training or rookie level Digimon and most people would just think "yes that seems normal", there are plenty of digimon that could pass for pokemon and vice versa, that's just the nature of cutesy monster RPGs.

They are both. The Mon part is using the Digi part. The bios for Digimon sometimes even mention what data they're from, like Anomalocarimon being from a research facility scanning ancient animals or Giromon being a virus scanner.

Go read the Sprawl Trilogy or Snow Crash. Both of those foundational Cyberpunk texts have the concept of metaphysical spirits that existed before the internet that we connect to. It's a concept that's been in the genre since the beginning.

Depends on what your interest is.

For anime, Digimon Adventure. Sub is good but dub adds soulful humor similar to what they did with OS Pokemon. The current season, Ghost Game, is pretty alright too.

For games, I guess Cyber Sleuth is the most newcomer/casual friendly, but the original Digimon World is the most in-spirit with the source material, which is virtual pets. But it's a bit of a slog since you have to grind so much and make sure your digimon eats, sleeps, doesn't die, and doesn't shit on the ground.

For virtual pets, the 20th aniversary re-release is a good cheap starting point that rolls up the first 5 v-pets into one device, but it's probably not going to be very exciting for someone who didn't grow up with v-pets in the 90's.

I don't know shit about the card games so can't say anything on that front.

The English version of the original card game was a pretty bastardized version of the Japanese ruleset. The cards were huge in Japan and the main series for a lot of kids, but of course died here.

Yes to the 20th anniversary and X because 20th is a comprehensive collection of all five of the OG devices in one with even more digimon and a few QOL features and AI battling, and the X is the official continuation of that with huge evolution trees and RPG mechanics to make it more engaging.

Yes to the vital bracelet with the caveat that it's not really a good substitute for a real V-pet since you have to buy a ton of those DIM cards to get very many digimon to choose from and it removes a ton of features from the more traditional v-pets.

No to pendulums unless you have deep pockets and don't care about "waggle", the 20th anniversary pendulums are amazing but way too expensive to recommend to a beginner. The new Pendulum Zs are just like the X devices but not as good, with smaller rosters, and with waggle. Also expensive.

There should probably also be mention of the fact that we've got third party hardware and software that allows for online battles and allows you to use your pet in a fanmade mmo.

Don't get too excited, it's called Digimon W0rld and there's mandatory discord loops you have to jump through to get an account and download the game. It's also not very good and mostly consists of battling the same digimon over and over because an NPC asked you to. Most people just use it for PVP tournaments.

The re-releases of the Digimon X or original Vpet would be what I'd suggest people get since they're cheap and provide a genuine vpet experience. Elements of the PSX game, Adventure and tamers are lost if you don't personally experience owning a vpet. Belts, to a lesser extent clothes in general, extreme humanoid-ness, and cyborg parts are probably the most egregious actual design elements you see frequently in Digimon and next to not at all in Pokémon.

In terms of it being used as an actual design criticism of actual Pokémon: A large portion of Digimon have notably much more busy and complex designs than Pokémon’s usually more clean and simple style. So when people say it looks like a Digimon they usually mean that a Pokémon’s design is too busy and complex to the point they feel it sticks out from and doesn’t fit well with the majority of other Pokémon.
Obviously people’s mileage may very in terms of where they draw these aesthetic lines though.

Other actual Digimon design philosophy is often oversized paws/hands/feet, conical claws or talons, and reptilian/avian animalistic eyes with darker corners. Pokemon may have a bigger fanbase, better games, and money.
But there's something neat about Digimon. Games may be hit or miss, but some can be fun. The anime is way better than Pokemon, and being a niche fandom (comparing it with Pokemon) gives it a more solid union.
Having said that, I'm tired they never made a official crossover just for shit and giggles.
