Whenever I play any game that isn't Johto or Sinnoh, I always edit the ROM and replace the starters with the Starter trio of either Johto or Sinnoh, because those are the only good Starters in the franchise. I also enable "Rival carries Starter throughout game" so that my rival has a good Starter as well.
