Switch is really popular and Pokemon attracts a big casual audience every time, of which aren't going to be very vocal or critical, online or otherwise. A perpetual revolving door of lots of kids, parents buying for said kids, and nostalgic people that aren't necessarily avid gamers.

The sales aren't deserved for this game in particular since it's very obviously compromised for a Pokemon game (although the DLC helps), but it is what it is. Not worth getting upset over something that's essentially out of our control. Also probably not very practical to lump the game's success on a single nebulous "fanbase".

Pokémon’s initial success was literally founded on the concept of multiplayer. Red/Blue required player between player trades to evolve its best Pokémon at a time when that sort of community engagement in video games was completely unheard of. Dynamaxing locks you out of access to normal moves, and is still vulnerable to off-the-wall strategies like trick+red card while enabling others like self Weakness Policy.
And purely from a design standpoint, there is a difference between the devs forcing you to use a Pokemon by making it OP and some Pokemon happening to benefit more from a mechanic than others.

It's stupid as fuck and it's baffling you can't see why. There was way more variety with Dmax, mega meta is lame and adds nothing because megas are just normal Pokemon but overpowered while Dmax Pokemon operate on their own temporary rules.

Using an item slot on one of the few handful of OP mega evolution Pokémon had absolutely NO downside whatsoever. You are not sacrificing anything by giving a Kangastan a mega evolution stone instead of literally any other item. It’s either a meta stomping demi-god or a complete shitmon depending on whether it is simply mega evolved.

They did a good job with stuff like Nature Mints, Vitamins for min-maxing, or renting Pokemon teams from other players, but actually playing online feels more limited somehow. Like the Y-Comm and Victory Station being in separate menus, needing "Link Codes" just to play with friends in co-op, moving GTS to the Home app, or removing VS Recorder from the game entirely. They keep reinventing the wheel when they don't need to.

You both fucking have it, this is not megas where you are being told "use these Pokemon", this is a new mechanic where you are being told "figure out how to use it". The idea a game mechanic is OP because you have to use it well to win is so stupid.
