He originally was just searching for a way to reach Arceus to ask it why life is unfair, when he found out about the legend of the plates, making him look for them. The spooky plate is literally the only plate he even found. It is very heavily implied that the Spooky plate had some kind of connection to Girantina, basically influencing him as soon as he touched it.
