I mean considering it was meant to be a side mode for an already pretty content filled remake I think it served its purpose pretty well
Not to mention there was actual incentive to use it because it let you catch pokemon not otherwise obtainable in the game

EVs, IVs, special moves, etc. are such obscure concepts for a 99% of the fanbase that a game like that wouldn't have sales at all (if that's the selling point). However if you made a fully fleshed Pokemon sports/fit game that happened to have that function, then yeah I guess it could work

This is a really cool idea. Pokemon should be exploring other genres like Rhythm, Tower Defense, Horror, and Workout. The moment you try to add competitive into it the idea becomes shit because you just turn the experience into a means to just do competitive. Let it stand on its own

Having it do something that has an effect which crosses over into other games helps make your Pokemon feel more alive. Like it's not just any Pokemon you're doing exercises with, but your Pokemon, and they're getting stronger with you. That's one of the fun things about the series
