But SM/USUM are some of the prettiest games on the 3ds. (As pretty as a 240p screen, that is)

Literally all they had to do was keep all the QOL from Gen 6 and them let the player have some agency in completing the trials.
Were it not for the senseless roadblocks and map markers preventing you from doing anything, the Alola games would be a nice precursor to Legends' open world gameplay.

Despite the repeated claims by people who didn't actually try to explore, the maps markers don't control you. The only times you aren't allowed to leave are before trial 1 and when you arrive on each island to meet new characters. 90% of the "cutscenes" that aren't in those are things like rival battles or evil team battles, which have always had some talking before and after.

They really wouldn't. You can already half-do so on emulator and in trying it all it reveals is how shitty and barebones Alola is as a region compared to the ones before it. Same applies to Galar, it's just a different flavor of shit.
