I mean it makes sense business wise.
You don't wanna upset the next gen with another remake. So tide them over using the same engine and pushing out more sales.
Also consider the fact that johto is where apricorns originated, the GS ball research could take place of the arceus catch all the find me meme. And on top of even all that young olk making a notebook pokedex is already a thing in the best pokemon movie.

I imagine if there's DLC it would take place where the Battle Zone is in the original games. Maybe like a desert area, a volcanic area and a tropical area with Pokemon that aren't native to Hisui like starters from other games or something.

Not the other poster, but Firespit is the island where the Poke League/Victory Road will be at. Mapwise it's way too close to Sinnoh mainland to be future Battle Zone.

Battle Zone/Sinjoh is the very obvious set up for dual DLC's ala SWSH

Firepit island is where the Pokemon league is, the battle zone isnt on the Hisui map - pretty sure that area isnt actually a part of Sinnoh in the first place.
