They've done this for every mainline title to some extent.

DexNav didn't leave Gen III
Poketch/Seals didn't leave Gen IV
Triple/Rotation Battles didn't leave Gen V
PSS/O-Powers didn't leave Gen VI
Z-Moves and SOS Battles didn't leave Gen VII
