Not like Clover, that is memes and references, I mean in the sense that "you are a pokemon trainer because thou must".
If I would make a romhack (which I wouldn't because I have no talent nor skill), it would be the story of a guy who lives in an island, far from Kanto, Johto and Hoenn (those are my fav gens, so the story would happen there), yet he has to travel to those regions because reasons (I don't know, his family has a delivery service, and he wants to join the family business).
Also, many of the people that lives in the small island would be just mocking jokes, like a professor that is very friendly with female pokemon, a pokemon caretaker that treats you like a kid (even thoug you are an adult), and a crazy scientist who isn't interested in pokemon at all, and just wants to make crazy investions without Sylph or Devon rules.
Anyway, as you become the very best, and defeat the random "bad boy" group (Kanto would be another attempt to a Yakuza rise after Team Rocket disbanded, Johto would be just teens trying to refuse traditions and going "we are cooler", and Hoenn would be Team Wind that are a bunch of TM and TA grunts trying to rule the land and sea after the bosses fucked it up, and one grunt got way over his head about not annoying god pokemons), you also develope the story of those in the island: your family did that delivery business because in reality they want to leave yet they are afraid of leaving what they are already know, the proffesor prefers pokemon because every time he had a relationship it went bad and he ended hurt, and his pokemon always cheered him up, some even replacing the girl (insert mandatory gardevoir joke here), the caretaker is barren and she sees herself as a mother to pokemon so she can have the kids she will never own, and the scientist is jealous of pokemon, and want to prove himself he can be better by making his many machines and tools.
