The fact that so many books still name GSC as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" Pokémon games ever only tells you how far Pokémon still is from becoming a serious art. Metroidvania critics have long recognized that the greatest Metroidvania of all time is Hollow Knight, which was not the most famous or acclaimed or best seller of its time, let alone of all times. FPS critics rank the highly controversial Quake 3 over other games which were highly popular around the world. Pokémon critics are still blinded by commercial success. GSC sold more than anything else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Metroidvania critics grow up playing a lot of Metroidvanias of the past, FPS critics grow up playing a lot of FPS games of the past. Pokémon critics are often totally ignorant of Pokémon games, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that GSC did anything worthy of being saved.
