I'm sure you've all noticed since LGPE that they've been churning out all sorts of one-off concepts and standalone titles, but that outside of SWSH, there haven't been any new Mythicals that would normally occupy those spaces. I'd like to refer everyone to the fact that Zarude back in 2020-2021 is the only new Mythical tied to a movie in Gen 8, and point out something we all seem to be overlooking.
Since Gen 4, the games have relied extensively on not just refreshing interest with new releases, but also new Mythicals, which have been vital in Japan to making profit off of box office sales. Most tickets are from kids or collectors who want to add that Mythical to their ensembles.
Because the coof happened though, the otherwise annual movie cycle's been put to a full stop because there's nowhere near as much money to be made without controversial health risks. Remember how M23 nosedived compared to even the Mewtwo Strikes Back remake? TPC and OLM don't want to be making movies when the only alternative is streaming services, which loses them the "buy a ticket, get a Mythical as a bonus" incentive that Japan's been used to.
We're not getting a traditional game that most would call Gen 9 until TPC permits GameFreak to do so. The Mythical Movie Cycle is the ONLY true hold they have on how GF makes their games, and TPC really does not like the fact that GF has to get experimental and churn out a lot more lesser titles to fill in the gaps that Movies and Mythicals have typically filled in when normally they'd be able to fully focus on developing for and releasing major titles. This is the first generation since Gen 2 that there's only been a single Mythical for the entire generation's duration when they normally have 3-4.
