Genuine question: why do people praise USUM It's the only mainline game I ever dropped, picked it up to finish it about 5 months later.
Everything in the game seems unchanged except for the worse/simplified writing, the disappointingly short Rainbow Rocket arc, that one Mantine minigame and the Ultra Worm Holes which were grindy as fuck and only shiny hunters cared for.

There are a ton of side quests, and a decent number of areas reworked like the new early ice cave. It has a lot of changes that are more subtle than just "post-game battle facility" and SM were already pretty good, so SM with more content are also good.

Because nu-genners need a game they can champion as better than XY to "prove" than Gen 6 didn't start the downfall.
USUM isn't good because SM wasn't good, and as a third version it didn't fix any of the major issues it had and was split into two for zero reason.
PLA is far better and it brings into question whether or not Iwao was just restricted by higher ups since it was his first major project.

Why would fans of Alola want to claim gen 6 was good? Alola was nice partially because it was such a big upgrade from Kalos. You can still see an overall decline in the series starting with 6 even if the quality did come back for a short time

Gen 6 is when the series picked up for a lot of people. They're just not the obnoxious breed like you all seem to be.

Why suddenly change the topic to age? If you want to talk about it, I can explain how I got into the series in late gen 4 and then enjoyed gen 5 in my early teens, but I'm not sure what that has to do with gen 7 being better than 6.

I think they'll go through the same process that Platinum and BW2 did, where they're evaluated more fairly after the "wahhh its the same game" syndrome wears off

Honestly the only thing I can see that keeps them from being good or replayable is the constant cutscenes and forced tutorials. I've been looking for some way to shut up Rotom for ages since he always seems to want to give you advice when you want to look at the map.

That's still a weird decision to me. Only thing I can figure is they couldn't figure out a way to make Necrozma part of the main plot and have her still be there?

Bitch still freezes and keeps Pokemon protected in her room in USUM so if they were trying to make her 'nicer' it sure the hell didn't work.

Ignore the discorder, gen 7 and 8's only similarities (at least the ones that aren't also shared with 6) are being fully 3D and not having HMs. Gen 7 is similar to 5 with more story focus and linearity than gens 1-4 but decent side content during the main story and a fun post-game. If you rush the story it will feel slow and handholdy but if you take your time and explore whenever you unlock a new pokeride you will find plenty to do. Make sure to play USUM instead of SM so there is even more extra content to enjoy between trials.
